Founded in 1999 by musical director and trumpet player Cindy Shea, Mariachi Divas is an all-female ensemble that continues to expand the scope of mariachi music. A two-time GRAMMY Award winner with seven GRAMMY nominations and three Latin GRAMMY nominations, they are one of the longest-running all-female mariachi ensembles.
Due to their multi-cultural/ethnic make-up, Mariachi Divas is one of the most unique musical ensembles in the world. Over the course of their twenty-year trajectory, the women of Mariachi Divas represent the following diverse backgrounds: Argentinian, Colombian, Costa Rican, Cuban, Egyptian, Guatemalan, Honduran, Japanese, Mexican, Mexican-American, Nicaraguan, Panamanian, Peruvian, Puerto Rican, Salvadoran, Samoan, Swiss, Thai, Tongan, and Anglo descent. Cindy Shea states, "Our foundations are rooted in mariachi, but we have added extra elements to reflect our own unique diversity… our own experiences. Music has been a way of uniting those diverse cultural backgrounds." This group of highly educated musicians has earned degrees ranging from Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Music, Master of Arts, Master of Music, Doctor of Philosophy, and Doctor of Music Arts across numerous fields.
With an established recording track record, their discography includes fifteen professional full-length album releases through Shea Records and East Side Records. Mariachi Divas specializes in providing professional mariachi music for commercials, television, and film recordings, as well as performing daily at Walt Disney Parks and Resorts in Anaheim, California as the official mariachi of Disney California for the past sixteen years until the present.
Mariachi Divas is known for its innovative and eclectic music, ranging from mariachi classics to jazz and pop. Their music can be characterized as sophisticated, smooth, and refined, providing an elegant approach to the mariachi tradition and part of the booming sound in which Mariachi Divas excel. Over the years, they have performed, recorded, and collaborated with artists such as Alejandro Fernández, “Agridulce” on the album Rompiendo Fronteras (2017), Ozomatli, single “Volver, Volver” (2017), Natalia Jiménez of La 5ª Estación, and the single “Esa Soy Yo” (2009) by Sergio Vallín of Maná, Adrian Allende (Mexican Dynasties Bravo TV Show), Big and Rich Cowboy Troy, Banda Adictiva, Beatriz Adriana, Pepe Aguilar, Graciela Beltrán y Jimena, Paquita la del Barrio, Aida Cuevas, Celia Cruz, Shaila Dúrcal, Alejandro Fernández, Vicente Fernández Jr., Lupita Infante, Angel Lopez (Son by Four), Israel “Cachao” Lopez, Luis Miguel, Emilio Navaira, Ozomatli, Ezequiel Peña, Guadalupe Pineda, Yolanda del Río, Jenni Rivera, Alejandro Sanz, Joan Sebastian, and Marco Antonio Solis.
