Miles Davis Experience 1949-1958

This multimedia musical production celebrates the most influential jazz musician of the 20th century through photos, film clips, beat poetry, and live performances by 29-year-old trumpet phenomenon Ambrose Akinmusire (Thelonious Monk Jazz Competition winner; protégé of Terence Blanchard). This collaboration with Blue Note Records recreates Miles’ musical development year-by-year.

“Blue Haze”   “’Round About Midnight”  “Birth of the Cool”

Targeted for those too young to have had the chance to experience this critical period’s work or those not lucky enough to have seen him performing in his time, the show includes live music performed in the manner it was first presented, with era photos and film clips brought together by a beat poet-style narrator.

By following Miles' musical development in linear chronology, we will tell the story of post-war America, the challenges and optimism, the civil rights struggle, the historical milestones, and the creative cauldron of new music that Miles pioneered and nurtured. The show will be an immersivee experience -- more than a concert, less narrow then a scripted play or media presentation. The goal is to leave the audience member with a feeling of what it was like to live in America during this important period.

The Miles Davis Experience: 1949-1959, recaptures the sound, historical and cultural context of this ciritical period of American History through the lense of jazz music and its most iconic innovator, Miles Davis. The tour will provide a good opportunity to reintroduce Miles to a younger audience and those unfamiliar with his legacy. It will also give the large base of his fans a chance to experience and celebrate his music in a new live setting.
