Veteran’s Day Party at the Tower

Veteran’s Day Party at the Tower

It’s an evening of big band music and nostalgia when the Tower Theatre Foundation presents the Notables Swing Band in a concert celebrating Veteran’s Day, Tuesday, Nov. 11 at 6:30 pm. Doors to the theatre open at 5:30 pm for a pre-show “picnic.” Patrons will enjoy vintage 1940-50s newsreels and cartoons on the Tower’s big screen as they snack from individual, catered box dinners with drinks (for an extra charge). Additional proceeds from the evening will benefit two local veterans’ support organizations, Caring for Troops and Band of Brothers. Sponsors include Miller Lumber.

With a dance floor and several swing dancers. Attendees are encouraged to show-off their own Jitterbugs and Lindy Hops to the music of Count Basie, Duke Ellington and Glenn Miller.

The Notables are nearly two dozen local musicians and singers, led by Marvin Thomas, a lifelong trumpet player. Thomas owned and operated several clubs in the 1960’s and 70s, but he always kept his “day job” as a pharmacist. He formed the Notables in 2010, recruiting many musicians from the Cascade Horizon Band.

“Our players come from all walks of life,” said Thomas. “The group is like a big family, and we consider veterans an essential part of that family.” Member John Aklonis added, “Most of us are veterans, or have a son, daughter or grandchild in the service. That’s why this celebration and fundraising event is very important to us.”

The nonprofit Tower Theatre Foundation owns and operates the historic stage in downtown Bend. The Foundation’s mission is to be the leading performing arts organization, providing cultural and education programs that make an essential contribution to Central Oregon’s lifestyle and strengthen the community. Membership, program information and individual and group tickets are available at the box office (835 NW Wall), by phone (541-317-0700) or online (www.towertheatre.org).
