Free Family Film, Carolers and a Castle of Cans

Free Family Film, Carolers and a Castle of Cans

The Tower Theatre is the center of downtown Bend’s monthly “First Friday” December 2 when it hosts a family-friendly evening featuring continuous showings of the holiday special “Christmas Every Day,” carols by the Central Oregon Mastersingers, and COCC students building a canned goods castle in the lobby. Admission is free.

Starting at 5:30 p.m., and repeating every thirty minutes through 8 o’clock, watch the animated comedy “Christmas Every Day,” based on the classic short story by William Dean Howells. A powerful castle ornament is home to a magic fairy who grants special wishes. When young Tilly begs for it to be Christmas every day “forever and ever,” her wish comes to life in ways she never imagined!

First aired on CBS Television in 1987, this delightful turn-of-the-century story features the voices of Edie McClurg (“Planes, Trains and Automobiles,” “Ferris Bueller's Day Off”), Miriam Flynn ("Christmas Vacation,” “Land Before Time,” “DuckTales”), and Dick Orkin (“Tim Conway Show,” “CentralOregonJobs.com” radio spots). The program was originally commissioned by Ray Solley, the Tower's executive director, when he worked at CBS in Los Angeles.

Between showings of “Christmas Every Day,” members of the Central Oregon Mastersingers will perform familiar Christmas carols, including “Bring a Torch, Jeannette Isabella” and “Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming.”

Throughout the evening in the Tower lobby students from an event planning class at COCC will create “Castle of Cans”—a large citadel constructed from food cans donated by local businesses and Bend schools. Help them finish the fortress by bringing a canned good or two to the Tower on First Friday. All canned goods and cash donations benefit NeighborImpact. Everyone “can” make a difference in the lives of others.

Light refreshments will be available, courtesy of the new Cascade Culinary Institute at COCC.

The nonprofit Tower Theatre Foundation owns and operates the historic venue in downtown Bend. The Foundation’s mission is to provide performing arts, civic, educational and social events that enliven and enrich the lives of all Central Oregonians.

Program schedules and information, gift certificates, as well as group, individual and 2011-12 season tickets are available at the Tower Theatre box office (835 NW Wall Street; 541-317-0700), at www.towertheatre.org, and on www.facebook.com/TheTowerTheatre.
