Cat Call Productions returns for a fourth year of all local, professional quality musical theater, this time with Mel Brooks’ Tony Award-winning musical farce, The Producers.
Mel Brooks’ tony award winning musical farce, The Producers, tells the story of a washed up Broadway producer and neurotic accountant who decide that they can make more money with a flop than a hit. They proceed to try and produce the worst show in Broadway history. They buy the rights to the worst play ever written and hire the worst director in town. They think they have a sure-fire flop but somewhere things go horribly right and the well crafted disaster becomes a smash hit.
The Producers is a 1968 satirical dark comedy cult classic film written and directed by Mel Brooks. The film starred Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder. In 1968, The Producers won the Academy Award for Best Writing, Story and Screenplay—Written Directly for the Screen, and Gene Wilder was nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role.
The Producers was adapted into a musical by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan from Brooks' 1968 film. The Broadway show originally starred Nathan Lane as Max Bialystock and Matthew Broderick as Leo Bloom. It won 12 Tony Awards, breaking the record held for 37 years by Hello Dolly!, which had won 10 in 1964. Nathan Lane and Broderick went on to star in the 2005 movie version of the musical by the same name.
Mel Brooks is an American film director, screenwriter, composer, lyricist, comedian, actor and producer. He is best known as a creator of broad film farces and comic parodies. He began his career as a stand-up comic and as a writer for the early TV variety show Your Show of Shows. His most known films include The Producers, Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, History of the World, Part I and Spaceballs.
Brooks is a member of the short list of entertainers with the distinction of having won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony award. Three of his films ranked in the American Film Institute's list of the top 100 comedy films of all-time: Blazing Saddles at number 6, The Producers at number 11, and Young Frankenstein at number 13.
