The Tower Theatre Foundation’s Tour du Chocolat crowned four chocolatiers in five categories during April’s First Friday festivities. Nearly 800 attendees sampled the sweet smorgasbord and experienced the Tower from a new perspective—on stage, tasting samples from twelve area bakers.
Broken Top Club’s entry captured the judges’ taste buds and eyes; it won both Best Tasting and Best Presentation. Fearless Baking’s assorted truffles (named “English Tea Party” and created by a quartet of COCC Culinary Students) won first place in Best Technique and third place for Best Flavor. La Magie Bakery’s lavish wedding cake won for Best Showpiece, second place for Best Flavor and third place for Best Presentation. Lidia’s Chocolates—a variety of truffles displayed in fanciful designer shoes—took home the trophy for Most Creative Original Theme.
The raffle winner of a complimentary Tower membership was Vicki Brown of Bend.
The Tour, presented by Country Financial and hosted by 99.7 The Mountain’s Donna James, featured local chocolatiers from: 10 Below; 900 Wall; Broken Top; Fearless Baking; Ida’s Cupcakes; La Magie Bakery; Lidia’s Chocolates; Tate and Tate; The Well Traveled Fork; Zydeco; and COCC’s Cascade Culinary Institute.
Chef Gene Fritz, Director and Executive Chef at COCC’s Cascade Culinary Institute, headed a panel of local judges: The Bulletin’s John Gottenberg Anderson; COTV’s Kristi Miller; International School of Baking’s Marda Stoliar; Country Financial’s Bill Miller; and KBND’s Julia Gray. Last year’s Best of Tour prize went to Broken Top Club.
Proceeds support the nonprofit Tower Theatre Foundation.
