In the little village of Anatevka, Tevye, a poor dairyman, tries to instill in his five daughters the traditions of his tightly knit Jewish community in the face of changing social mores and the growing anti-Semitism of Czarist Russia. Rejecting their father’s wishes as well as the matchmaker’s efforts, Tevye’s three eldest daughters marry the men they love.
Rich in historical and ethnic detail, Fiddler on the Roof has touched audiences around the world with its humor, warmth and honesty. Its universal themes cut across barriers of race, class, nationality and religion, leaving audiences crying tears of laughter, joy and sadness. The celebrated score features songs loved the world over: Sunrise Sunset, If I Were a Rich Man, and Matchmaker to name just a few.
Directed by Lilli Ann Linford-Foreman. Music Direction by Jean Shrader. Conducted by Michael Gesme.
Fiddler on the Roof is based on Sholem Aleichem stories by special permission of Arnold Perl.
The Children’s Matinee is 3 hours long with an intermission. This matinee is produced specifically for children and their accompanying adults. Bring a child, or two or three or more and take part in spreading the Joy of Musical Theater.
The Children’s Matinee is a great way to introduce children to musical theater. Adults share the magic and music of Fiddler on the Roof with your favorite children and find comfort in the knowledge that the audience is made up of their peers. Approximately 3 hours with an intermission.
The Obsidian Opera Company extends a heartfelt thank you to the Deschutes Cultural Coalition for providing grant funding to provide 100 tickets to disadvantaged children and their families and/or caregivers to attend this matinee and for funding that will enable us to include the orchestra in this year’s Children’s Matinee.
